Mai Vang is the daughter of Hmong refugees parents from Laos. Mai was born and raised in south Sacramento and is the eldest of 16 children. As a child, Mai’s parents believed that public education was the key to a better life for her 15 siblings. A proud product of public education, Mai knows first-hand how investment in our public schools can save lives. Mai’s public high school teacher, Ms. Jean Crowder spent hours of her own time with Mai after school to help her succeed.

After becoming the first in her family to graduate from college, Mai returned home determined to improve the community that raised her.

Mai lives in the Meadowview Neighborhood. She holds Bachelors in Biology and Sociology from the University of San Francisco and dual Master’s degrees in Public Health and Asian American Studies from UCLA. During her free time she enjoys kickboxing and spending time with her 5 siblings.
